Founder's Vision

JIMMY SIMS

•In 1992 my father Jimmy Sims, a retired teacher purchased a ServiceMaster Franchise in Birmingham Al. He purchased a Industial Heavy Duty cleaning location. With this designation we could performed Fire and Water Restorations for Residential and Commerical properties, Hazardous Clean Up, Commercial Specialty Cleaning, and Disaster Response Services. We have work for all insurance companies: Allstate, State Farm, Alfa, to name a few.

In late 1993 insurance companies to streamline response of their client’s claim needs, so they implemented a one call plan. Which meant they wanted to make one call to their restoration providers to address their client claim needs. while already providing content cleaning they now providers who could also repair the dwelling.

NAMING INSPIRATION

Syms Contractors Inc. Company

With growing client demands for expanded restoration services, I was given the responsibility to name, develop, and lead a new company. My father, always modest, requested a straightforward name that didn’t include our family name. As I drove through Atlanta, I spotted a clothing store called Syms, a name that had stood the test of time for nearly 100 years. It resonated with me instantly. That’s how Syms Contractors came into existence, carrying a name synonymous with longevity and reliability.
Building Syms

From Concept To Reality

While working as a disaster restoration provider for insurance companies, we saw potential for Syms to expand into other areas. My father, always looking ahead, began taking on small commercial construction projects like interior buildouts, painting, and drywall. This was particularly exciting for me, as I had been exposed to construction from a young age through my father’s rental properties. In June 1994, my father incorporated Syms Contractors Inc in Alabama and secured our State General Contractors license. We were a small company but now firmly in the commercial sector. We are forever grateful for my father’s foresight and remain dedicated to driving Syms Contractors to new heights.

Jimmy Sims’ lasting impact is a shining example of the power of positive leadership, unwavering dedication, and a heart of gold. As the founder of Syms Contractors, Jimmy fostered a culture of joy, optimism, and empowerment, leaving a lasting mark on the lives of those he touched. With his background as a retired teacher, Jimmy brought a unique passion for developing others, instilling a can-do spirit that drove the company forward. His commitment to nurturing talent and uplifting individuals continues to shape the company’s culture and values. Jimmy’s legacy extends far beyond the business world. When his grandson Jory was diagnosed with Autism at age three, Jimmy’s love and devotion sparked a new commitment: to support and uplift the Autism community. This personal connection ignited a passion to make a difference. Inspired by Jimmy’s vision and love, his son Jarrod and daughter-in-law Arlicia founded Jory’s Journey Foundation, a testament to Jimmy’s enduring legacy. The foundation honors Jimmy’s memory by supporting Autism awareness, advocacy, and support initiatives, ensuring his impact will be felt for generations to come. In recognition of Jimmy’s remarkable impact, we established the Jimmy Sims Trailblazer Award, honoring outstanding achievements in the African American business community. We also continue to support initiatives and organizations dedicated to Autism awareness, advocacy, and support, ensuring Jimmy’s legacy of love, acceptance, and empowerment continues to inspire and uplift future generations.

Jarrod Sims

Jarrod Sims has been at the helm of Syms Contractors since 1993, following in the footsteps of his father. With a deep-seated dedication to the company, Jarrod has successfully led Syms Contractors through numerous projects and community initiatives, ensuring the company remains a pillar of excellence and integrity in the industry. In addition to his role at Syms Contractors, Jarrod serves as the President of the Black Contractors Association Alabama Chapter (BCAAC). His leadership extends beyond the company, reflecting his commitment to fostering growth and development within the community. With deep roots in the community, Syms Contractors is an integral part of the local landscape, continually striving to improve and uplift those around us.
